Learning to recognise words is the starting point for reading.Lists of the words to be recognised, spelt correctly and understood, are shown for each Key Stage on pages 24 and 25.See if your child can read them.

A parent correcting a child's punctuation and spelling can often be a problem for their teacher
who may not know their ability, or identify weaknesses with that topic.
When correcting,it is helpful to amend with a cross the original words written by the pupil,
so that the teacher can see the mistakes.

Useful help can be given with comprehension exercises set for homework.Children often need assistance when
picking out the main points from a piece of writing and putting them down on paper.

A dictionary at home is an invaluable tool for your child to look up meanings, parts of speech and abbreviations.

Punctuation marks show when to pause or take a breath, when reading.
Full stops mark the end of a sentence, you always take a breath.
Colons also show a long pause is necessary, but semi-colons are shorter.
the comma is the shortest pause you can take.

Failure to check and proof-read written work, is the single most important error made by students. Boring but true!
Special notes

* Proper nouns must have a capital letter at the beginning.
* If it doesn't have a verb, it is not a sentence!
